Many of Massachusetts' 756,000 small businesses need commercial auto insurance to protect against accidents and mishaps involving their business vehicles. Commercial autos are considered to have more risk than personal autos and often need specific coverages and limits beyond what a personal auto policy can cover.

Vehicles driven by employees or used for business activities, such as visiting clients or making deliveries, usually need commercial auto insurance. Personal auto insurance typically doesn't cover vehicles used for work purposes.
More infoContractors often use vehicles to transport tools, equipment, and supplies between job sites. These daily work activities usually call for commercial auto coverage rather than a personal policy.
More infoFood trucks, restaurants, and ice cream vendors depend on vehicles to deliver products and serve customers. Many also have expensive, permanently attached equipment that a commercial auto policy can help protect.
More infoVehicles used to transport people for a fee need a commercial auto policy. This includes taxis, limousines, and non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) vehicles. Some ridesharing businesses also require commercial coverage.

You can also take advantage of discounts to find ways to save on your policy.
Some industries have more risk than others. An electrician who carries tools and equipment to various job sites every day can expect to pay more than an insurance agent who runs occasional errands.
Your vehicle's size and use affect your rate. A heavy food truck with a grill and a deep fryer will likely have a higher premium than a small cargo van with minimal equipment.
Accidents and moving violations can cause your premium to go up. Insurers will typically review the last three years of driving history for everyone listed on your policy.
It's common to pay more for commercial auto coverage in a large city like Boston than in a smaller city like Pittsfield. That's because prices are usually higher in places that have more claims or expensive settlements. Areas prone to weather-related events, such as tornadoes and hurricanes, can also affect your rate.
The distance you routinely travel can influence your commercial auto rate. For example, a vehicle with a local route within Springfield's city limits is considered lower risk than a vehicle with a regional route that covers all of Massachusetts.
The amount of coverage you need affects your premium. Policyholders with the Massachusetts state minimum limits of 25/50/30 will pay less than someone needing a combined single limit of $1 million.
Massachusetts' state minimum liability limit of 25/50/30 is called a split limit. It separates the dollar amounts payable by your insurer for bodily injury and property damage into three groups:
If you choose the state minimum limits, your policy will pay up to these amounts if you're at fault for an accident. Learn more about liability coverage in Massachusetts.
Massachusetts law requires commercial auto policies to have a minimum liability limit of $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $30,000 for property damage. Some policies may need to carry higher limits based on the types of vehicles they insure.
The state also requires personal injury protection (PIP). This coverage helps pay medical expenses for drivers, passengers, and certain pedestrians injured in an accident, regardless of who's at fault.
Commercial vehicles also need uninsured motorist (UM) insurance, which helps cover medical expenses and other costs if an uninsured, underinsured, or hit-and-run driver injures you in an accident.
Vehicles with a U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) motor carrier number will have separate coverage requirements. For example, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) typically requires semi trucks and other large vehicles traveling interstate to carry a minimum combined single limit of $750,000.
